Coco Gauff recently delighted fans by sharing a humorous anecdote as she finally unboxed her 2024 ESPY Award. The prestigious honor, which she won back in July, had been at her parents’ house for months before she got around to unpacking it.
The 2024 ESPY Awards, held on July 11 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, was a star-studded affair hosted by tennis legend Serena Williams. Gauff clinched the title of Best Tennis Player, outshining heavyweights like Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, and Carlos Alcaraz.
At just 19, Gauff had already made waves on the global tennis stage, particularly after capturing her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last year.
Due to her packed schedule, Gauff was unable to attend the ceremony but remained deeply appreciative of the honor. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) shortly after her win, Gauff expressed her gratitude to fans who voted for her
“Apparently I won an espy. thank you. I am super grateful! I wish I could’ve attended! thank you to everyone who voted,” Gauff wrote
Fast forward to December 2, Gauff finally got her hands on the trophy and shared her excitement on Instagram. In a playful story post, she revealed the award had been at her parent’s house since July and that she could finally unbox it.
The 20-year-old expressed her disbelief and excitement over the milestone, calling it a surreal experience to have grown up watching the ESPY Awards and now being a winner herself.
“Lol please tell me why I’m just now unboxing my ESPY trophy from months ago. Lol, it was at my parents’ house. This is insane!!! I grew up watching the ESPYs and to win an award is just so cool to me like wowwww. It’s also gorgeous!!!” she wrote
