Having worked closely with McEnroe during the Laver Cup, Fritz described the outspoken former player as “great icon” ahead of the Laver Cup starting on Friday.

Teammate and countryman Ben Shelton described how McEnroe gained his further respect during his debut at last year’s event.

Fritz was similarly unequivocal: “John is a lot of fun and a legend,” Fritz told the official Laver Cup site.

As the current American number one, Fritz is set to be the highest ranked player for Team World for the third time.

Who did Taylor Fritz play at last year’s Laver Cup?
Playing just one singles match last year, Fritz didn’t drop a set against Andrey Rublev, who was also Team Europe’s highest ranked player last year.

With the team only losing two points throughout, Fritz will need to use all his US Open form to challenge a far stronger team this year.

Fritz could likely meet Zverev once again, who he’s beaten at both the US Open and Wimbledon this year.

With no sign of world number one and US Open champion Jannik Sinner, Fritz’s moment for revenge will have to wait.
