Taylor Fritz’s run to the US Open final was a fairytale, but even the relentless support from his home country wasn’t enough to topple Jannik Sinner in the championship match.
An immediate break in the first set, the signal had been set, and it was bound to be an uphill battle from then on.
He threatened to get a foothold at times, but his 23-year-old opponent was simply too good.
In fact, Taylor Fritz even admitted that, at times, his style of play almost allowed Jannik Sinner to trample him…
Taylor Fritz makes disappointing admission from US Open final
Speaking at his post-match press conference, the American was in surprisingly good spirits despite the crushing nature of his defeat.
He fought well but never really looked like he could trouble the top seed, even though he did have a chance to serve for the third set.
Unfortunately, breaking down at the crucial moment, he also told reporters about the big mistake he made that allowed Sinner to “bully” him on court at times.
Fritz revealed: “When my plan A doesn’t work, the plan B that I normally fall back on would be to just bring it all in, be a little more confident, grind, and that works in conjunction with my serve against a lot of other players.
“I guess against him [Sinner] when I tried to sit low and not be so aggressive, then he would just bully me a little bit too much, so it was tough that my plan A didn’t really work for me until the third set.”
