Andy Roddick has cited Novak Djokovic’s latest Davis Cup singles win as an example to resurface a much-talked-about opinion of American club tennis players. Djokovic breezed past Ioannis Xilas on Saturday, September 14, with the win helping Serbia to establish a commanding 2-0 lead over Greece in the international team tennis tournament’s World Group I.
The former World No. 1’s outing against Xilas marked his first singles appearance since his shock third-round loss to Alexei Popyrin at the 2024 US Open. However, there were no such shocks this time as Djokovic barely allowed the No. 770 ranked Greek a sniff. The Serb lost a solitary game and wrapped up the match 6-0, 6-1 win in just 45 minutes.Djokovic would keep Serbia in contention for making the 2025 Davis Cup Group Stage Finals by registering another win, this time in doubles, alongside his protege Hamad Medjedovic. After the 24-time Major winner’s demolition job against Xilas, the now-retired Roddick took to X (formerly Twitter) and shared an article focusing on Djokovic’s resounding win.
Roddick’s post also featured a caption, through which he brought back the result of a past survey, where most club tennis players in America opined that they could clinch at least a game against professional tennis players.
“Do we remember that poll that said something like the majority of club players said that they could win a game ???”
While the 2003 US Open champion’s post was somewhat cryptic, he presumably was making the point that when even a lowly-ranked professional struggles to take a game off of a top-level player, club players have absolutely no chance.
