Gabriela Sabatini, who once dated former POTUS Donald Trump, has a long history of being associated with famous names. Many names from pop culture have been linked with Sabatini in the past as well. Recently, rumors of a relationship with fellow Argentinian tennis icon Juan Martin Del Potro were doing rounds. So what’s Sabatini’s relationship status as of right now?
The 1990 US Open winner was rumored to be dating her close friend Juan Martin Del Potro, with whom she is gearing up to play a mixed doubles exhibition match on Wednesday at the US Open. The duo will be taking over Caroline Wozniacki and Andy Roddick at the Arthus Ashe stadium. The rumors about Sabatini and Potro gained further momentum in December last year.
The two were spotted together at an event celebrating 100 years of the Argentinian Olympic Committee and Sabatini shared the photo on Instagram. Moreover, in July 2023, she posted an image of the two of them having dinner together, with Sabatini writing, “I admire you and I love you so much,” in the caption. She also posted a photo with him when Del Potro retired from tennis in 2022, paying tribute to the tennis icon and wishing him the best, ending the caption with an “I love you.”
While many pondered in the past if the duo were dating, neither Sabatini nor Del Potro ever confirmed their relationship status. Hence, to date, the former WTA star’s relationship status is single.
Sabatini has been a name synonymous with elegance and power on the tennis courts. But the former Argentine tennis star, who clinched an Olympic medal in 1988, has equally captivated fans with her off-court life. She was reportedly in a relationship with Donald Trump, back in 1989, when she was just 19 years old. While their relationship lasted for only a month or so, it caught several eyes propelling Sabatini to mainstream popularity.
She also dated popular singer Ricky Martin in 1992 and they were reportedly together for five months. It was also rumored in the media that she was in a relationship with Hollywood superstar and actor Mickey Rourke, Argentinian TV presenter Leo Montero, and French tennis player Henri Leconte at different stages of her life.
She also briefly dated American songwriter and singer Michael Bolton. Apart from this, Sabatini dated Frank Unkelbach for a year between 1989-1990, and former Argentine tennis player Guillermo Roldan.
She is currently looking forward to giving her best in the exhibition match at the Hard Courts of America. Having retired in 1996, Sabatini has often appeared in exhibition matches. While she will back at the scene of her only singles Grand Slam win, for the Argentine player, the sport became monotonous long back.
When Gabriela Sabatini revealed her monotonous tennis routine
Seven years after hanging her racquets, she revealed the monotony that engulfed her tennis career. “In the beginning, it was a lot of fun, but after a few years, it was work – like going to an office. You can’t say, ‘Today I don’t feel like playing’, you can’t afford to do that,” she said per The Guardian.
Sabatini further revealed how the sport made her feel left out amongst her friends. “My friends would go out late but I had to eat early and go to bed. I couldn’t hang out, go to a movie, or get up late. Tennis, unlike most sports, has no off-season, just a relentless global calendar of tournaments.”
But as Sabatini makes a comeback on the tennis courts, it would be interesting to see if she can once again demonstrate the same skills and win on the hard courts again, even though it’s just an exhibition match.
